Wheels, Brakes & Sprocket

An obvious point to start replacing parts was the rear wheel, having been destroyed in the "how fast does the throttle open" incident. I'd done the usual searches of ebay and phone calls to breakers yards, but either the prices were too high, or I missed the end of the auctions. Until I noticed another mis-spelt item on ebay for a pair of wheels. I watched them and they didn't sell, so I contacted the seller. He was annoyed that they hadn't sold on ebay, as apparently they had been auctioned several times without a single bidder. I didn't have the heart to tell him to learn how to spell, but at least he reluctantly agreed to let me take the wheels off his hands for not a lot of cash.

The wheels came with disks, sprocket carrier, sprocket, etc. Even the bearings were still good. A thorough clean up and they looked as good as new. The rear tyre was bald as a coot, so I needed to get a new tyre for that. The front, although still very legal wasn't an ideal choice for a sportsbike, so I took both wheels along with the original front from my bike to get the front swapped and purchase a matching rear.

A phone call to Talon Engineering got me a new rear sprocket - the chain hssn't been stretched much but I figured that if Im going to put a few nice parts on the bike a £20 sprocket couldn't hurt.

It was around this time when a chat with Rich from Bikes, Trikes 'n' Stuff (Tel: 01733 896002) had me ordering a complete set of BRAKING brake disks and pads. These disks really are the dogs danglies, with the new pads fitted just pushing the bike round the drive you can actually feel a much firmer initial bite. Can't wait to see what they're like on the road!

With the stunning brake disks fitted, it made me notice just how bad the original disk bolts were - lots of corrosion. So a phone call to Pro-bolt got me a set of Gold Titanium disk bolts. Much nicer, stronger and lighter than the originals. Alright, I know it's probably only saved a few grammes in weight, but that and the weight saving of the brake-disks should make some difference to the unsprung mass, which in turn will improve the handling.
