PerversePolisher's GSX-R 7/11 Battery Box

The battery box for my GSX-R was made to use up the space that remains under the tank once the airbox has been removed. The construction is very simple and quite easy to do, given a bit of time and careful measurement. First rule of doing any modification like this is to measure twice and cut once you don't generally get a second chance once you've cut or welded things onto your frame - the damage has been done, and it can be tricky to make it good again. So make sure you get it right first time!

A pair of rails was mounted across the underside of the spars of the frame. These were carefully positioned so that they would not interfere with the fuel tank or tap, and were exactly underneath the cavernous hole under the tank.

The box was made from 1mm sheet ally, the base was cut first with the sides made to match the base and all the same height. It was surprising just how much room there is available under the tank. So I have decided to hide as much of the electrics in there as possible.

Once the seams of the box were welded up, the box was sat on top of the two rails and the tank put on the bike to check the position. The position was marked and then with the box still in place 4 holes were drilled straight through the base of the box and the mounting rails at the same time. This ensures that the holes will line up exactly.

4 bolts through the base to secure it and the job's done. I've not yet drilled holes for the wiring to pass into and out of the box, as I haven't worked out where I want the loom to run, but that is very simple to do. Please remember that when the holes for the cables are drilled, they will have sharp edges which means that any movement in the wiring whilst you are riding will eventually wear through the outer sheath and probably short out. So you need to fit some rubber grommets in the holes to protect the cables from the sharp edges.
