Brake Calipers

The brake calipers that I'm using have come from a GSXR1000k1. Mounted onto the GSXR750J forks using a set of adapter-plates manufactured by SteelHeart Engineering.

Since acquiring the calipers they have been stored in a box in the corner of my workshop. Unfortunately when I dug them out to fit them to the bike I discovered that they had corroded - badly!

After spending several evenings attempting to clean up the corrosion, I decided that I had no other choice than to strip them completely and repaint all the external surcafes and give the insides a thorough clean. The calipers came apart quite easily which allowed easy access for repainting and cleaning.

I repainted the externals of the caliper bodies with gold Smoothrite and the bolt-heads with Humbrol gloss-black enamel, which should last (I knew I'd have to toch-up the paint in the bolts once I'd re-assembled the calipers, so enamel is a really good choice for this).

The pistons were checked for wear, and they all moved smoothly and evenly, so I decided that there was nothing more to do with them. Tha calipers were re-assembled after the paint had been allowed to harden for a few days. I still need to fit some brake-pads, but at least they were now ready to fit onto the 7/11.
