Rear Wheel
This Rear wheel originally came from a GSXR1100WR, Being a nice 5.5" wide and
buying it nice and cheaply, it became ideal for my project. It already had
polished rims, with a purple painted centre, which was looking rather tired.
So out came the polishing equipment again.
If you
have already read the about the front wheel, then you'll already know that
preparing a wheel is not for the faint-hearted. First off I had to strip
the wheel, which included removing the brake disk, sprocket carrier, wheel
bearings and cush-drive rubbers. The next thing to do was to remove the
paint finish. There was no paint on the rims, so I simply used a very fine
sand to sand-blast the paint off of the wheel centre.
Out came the polishing mops, and a quick finish with some liming powder and
Autoglym! I'm not overly pleased with the result of this wheel as it seems to
have some rather nasty casting faults and it may have been fully polished
before I bought it, as there are some nasty marks in it. I have done my best
to get rid of them, but some just do not want to shift.
New bearings and new cush-drive rubbers were fitted. The sprocket carrier was
fitted (even though I don't have a rear sprocket yet). Unfortunately when I
went to fit the brake disk I realised that the centre of the wheel could still
be seen. I was unable to polish inside this area of the wheel and there was
still traces of the original purple paint. I cleaned up the area and prepared
it for painting with a grease and heat proof satin-black paint. Once the paint
was dry it was simply a matter of bolting on the new brake disk - a rather funky
laser-cut wavy disk supplied by Big CC Racing which was held in place with a set
of gold titanium disk bolts from Probolt.
All that's left to do to the wheel now is fit a nice sprocket and a decent tyre.
